Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) announced on the 22nd that it will expand the recipients of the Veterans Honor Allowance to all individuals covered by the "Act on Honorable Treatment and Support for Persons of Distinguished Services to the State," increasing the number of supported veterans from about 3,990 to over 4,100 starting this month.
To broadly expand the recipients of the Veterans Honor Allowance, the district revised the "Ordinance on the Honor and Support for National Veterans of Yangcheon-gu, Seoul" last June. Accordingly, starting this month, the following groups will also receive a monthly district Veterans Honor Allowance of 50,000 KRW: ▲ April 19 Revolution Meritorious Persons ▲ Fallen Public Officials ▲ Public Officials Injured in the Line of Duty ▲ Special Meritorious Fallen Persons ▲ Special Meritorious Disabled Persons ▲ Special Meritorious Persons.
The district stated, "With the ordinance revision, about 100 additional recipients will benefit, and we expect the honor and support for national veterans to be further strengthened."
Individual notices for allowance application will be sent to eligible recipients, and applicants will receive the Veterans Honor Allowance starting from the month of application. Those already receiving the Seoul City Veterans Allowance will be automatically paid 50,000 KRW on the 25th of each month from July onwards into the account registered with the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs without a separate application process.
However, national veterans who are not eligible for the Seoul City Veterans Allowance and have not yet applied for the Veterans Honor Allowance can visit their local community service center with their veteran ID card (or family member ID card) and a copy of their bankbook to apply.
Last year, the district significantly improved the welfare of national veterans by tripling the number of Veterans Honor Allowance recipients through the removal of age restrictions and the prohibition on duplicate payments for Seoul City War Veterans Honor Allowance recipients.
Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, "The Republic of Korea exists today because of the national veterans who devoted themselves to the country," and added, "We will continue to make greater efforts to improve the welfare and honor of national veterans."
