Yeongdeungpo-gu Steps Up as a Solution Provider for Housing Inconveniences of Single-Person Households

Yeongdeungpo-gu (District Mayor Choi Ho-kwon) announced that it will operate the ‘Yeongil-i’s Mom and Dad’ project to quickly and easily resolve inconveniences in the housing life of single-person households in the area.

Recently, due to changes in social and economic environments, the number of single-person households has been continuously increasing. This year, the proportion of single-person households in Yeongdeungpo-gu also reached an all-time high, accounting for 50.5% (97,015 people) of all households.

As single-person households have become a common household type that anyone can experience during their life cycle, the district supports a comfortable and satisfying life by resolving difficulties faced by those living alone through the ‘Yeongil-i’s Mom and Dad’ project.

‘Yeongil-i’ is an abbreviation of ‘Yeongdeungpo-gu Single-person Household,’ and the project means that the district acts as a mom and dad to quickly resolve various inconveniences that single-person households find difficult to handle alone. In particular, the district has signed a business agreement with a social cooperative to provide personnel guaranteed for safety so that residents can seek help with peace of mind.

This project addresses a wide range of requests, from minor to complex types. Applicants can request light assistance such as ▲catching insects ▲hammering nails ▲tool rental, as well as services like ▲partial repair of window screens and silicone ▲attaching window insulation vinyl ▲replacing door knobs and lighting ▲simple wall drilling ▲organizing electrical wires. However, the service targets inconveniences that can be resolved within 30 minutes and does not cover large-scale repairs. Material costs may occur, with up to 20,000 KRW supported; any excess amount must be borne by the applicant.

Any single-person household residing in Yeongdeungpo-gu can apply, either through the ‘Yeongdeungpo-gu Single-person Household Support Center’ website or by phone.

Applicant A said, “They carefully checked for other problems such as a malfunctioning front door lock besides the requested task,” and added, “I had been enduring inconveniences until now, but I am grateful that I can easily resolve them through this project.”

Additionally, the Single-person Household Support Center plans to hold a housekeeping special lecture called ‘Taking Care of Myself’ about the ‘home’ where I live in September. Currently, it supports various programs reflecting the diverse interests and characteristics of single-person households, including ▲exercise (running crew, self-defense, etc.) ▲daily law ▲small group meetings.

The district also accompanies the entire process from real estate contract consultation to on-site and contract signing through the ‘Single-person Household Jeon/Wolse Safe Contract Assistance Service,’ which is available to any single-person household wishing to reside in Yeongdeungpo-gu.

Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu, said, “I hope this project will be a great opportunity to promptly solve problems that have not been resolved so far,” and added, “We will continue to do our best to support single-person households by discovering policies that alleviate their difficulties and add vitality to their daily lives.”
