Republican US House Speaker Says "Biden Should Resign from Presidency Too"

Mike Johnson, Speaker of the House and a member of the U.S. Republican Party, on the 21st (local time) demanded that President Joe Biden resign from the presidency following his sudden withdrawal from the Democratic presidential candidacy.

Speaker Johnson wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that "If Joe Biden is not fit to run for president, then he is not fit to perform the duties of the president."

He insisted, "He must immediately resign from the presidency." He added, "I am very much looking forward to November 5th (the U.S. presidential election day)."

Earlier, Speaker Johnson also suggested that legal issues could arise if the Democratic presidential candidate were to be replaced. In an interview last week, he pointed out that replacing the Democratic candidate would be "an act against everything that has happened over the past 14 days," and said, "They chose Joe Biden. (If the candidate is replaced) it would at least violate the laws of some states."

Meanwhile, President Biden abruptly withdrew from the presidential race on the same day, just over three months before the U.S. presidential election in November. This came about a month after he faced comprehensive pressure within the Democratic Party to quit running following his defeat in the presidential TV debate on the 27th of last month. President Biden also expressed his official support for Vice President Kamala Harris as the next Democratic presidential candidate.
