Chairman Choi Hojung Attends Joint Memorial Ceremony of Educational Community on the 1st Anniversary of Teacher Seo Icho's Sacrifice

Choi Hojung, Chairperson of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, attended the joint memorial ceremony held by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education on the 1st anniversary of the death in the line of duty of a teacher at Seoi Elementary School on the 18th. Afterwards, she visited the memorial incense altar set up at Seoi Elementary School to pay her respects with flowers.

In her memorial address, Chairperson Choi recalled, “A teacher who said that 2022 was truly a gift-like year after meeting pure and jewel-like shining children became a star in the sky the following year, alerting society to the serious reality of the decline in teachers’ authority.” She added, “We cried together for a teacher we did not know personally, and countless teachers shouted on the hot asphalt.”

Chairperson Choi continued, “The council enacted the ‘Ordinance on the Respect and Protection of Teachers’ Educational Activities’ to ensure that teachers’ educational activities are properly protected, and the ‘Ordinance on the Rights and Responsibilities of School Members’ to harmonize the rights and responsibilities of all school members.” She said, “This is just the beginning. Although change is slow, the council will work together to ensure that the educational field moves in the right direction.”

About 300 people attended the joint memorial ceremony of the educational community, including Lee Juho, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, Cho Hee-yeon, Superintendent of Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, lawmakers from both ruling and opposition parties, members of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, and the teachers’ bereaved families association.

After the joint memorial ceremony, Chairperson Choi moved to Seoi Elementary School, offered flowers at the memorial incense altar, and listened to the voices of on-site personnel.
