Despite two weeks of negotiations between the People Power Party and the Democratic Party, the People Power Party aims to take the Education Committee, while the Democrats demand the Administration and Planning and Economy Committees, causing negotiation difficulties.
Amid difficulties in forming the second half leadership of the Seoul Metropolitan Council, the People Power Party officially announced that it will elect committee chairs according to the proportion of seats following the breakdown of negotiations with the Democratic Party.
Lee Seong-bae, floor leader of the People Power Party, stated on the 19th, "We negotiated with the Democratic Party for the second half leadership over the past two weeks but failed to reach a conclusion."
The People Power Party emphasized that their top priority is to take the chairmanship of the Education Committee this time to normalize Seoul education after more than a decade under Superintendent Cho Hee-yeon’s administration. To this end, they proposed that the Education Committee chair be allocated to the ruling party, while the Urban Planning and Balanced Development Committee or the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee be allocated to the Democratic Party. However, the Democratic Party rejected all these proposals and instead demanded the Planning and Economy Committee chair, the Administration and Autonomy Committee chair, or additional standing committees?proposals that the ruling party found difficult to accept?thus expressing their refusal.
Accordingly, the People Power Party announced that the second half leadership will be formed by electing committee chairs according to the proportion of seats, signaling a unilateral push forward that is drawing attention.
Statement from the People Power Party of the Seoul Metropolitan Council Regarding Leadership Formation
On the 19th, the People Power Party of the Seoul Metropolitan Council issued the following statement regarding the council leadership formation.
Hello. We are the floor leader group of the People Power Party in the Seoul Metropolitan Council.
Over the past two weeks, the negotiation groups of both parties in the Seoul Metropolitan Council have done their best to negotiate the formation of the second half leadership.
The People Power Party regards taking the chairmanship of the Education Committee as the most important goal this time to normalize Seoul education after more than a decade under Superintendent Cho Hee-yeon’s administration.
To this end, we proposed that the Education Committee chair be allocated to the ruling party, and the Urban Planning and Balanced Development Committee or the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee be allocated to the Democratic Party, but the Democratic Party rejected all of these proposals.
The Democratic Party demanded the Planning and Economy Committee chair, the Administration and Autonomy Committee chair, or additional standing committees?proposals that the ruling party found difficult to accept.
Even today, the Democratic Party floor leader group refused to accept the proposal of three standing committees based on the number of seats and declared they would engage in protests outside the council, rejecting negotiations.
What exactly is the purpose of these protests outside the council?
Therefore, today the People Power Party floor leader group concluded that the timing of the leadership formation can no longer be delayed.
Now, as the ruling party, the People Power Party will responsibly elect committee chairs according to the proportion of seats.
We hope the Democratic Party will promptly join in the leadership formation.
The place where we must work is not outside the council, but inside the council chamber.
All members of the People Power Party in the Seoul Metropolitan Council will work harder for the citizens, focusing solely on them.
