Some Low-Cost Airlines Experience Booking and Ticketing Errors
Online Game Server Instability Also Reported
No Impact on Public Institutions Using Domestic Companies
Windows Users and Others Face Errors
As a disruption occurred in the cloud service of Microsoft (MS) in the United States, a chain of damages is occurring domestically as well, including the ticketing and reservation systems of some domestic low-cost carriers (LCCs) and online game servers becoming unresponsive.
According to the aviation industry on the 19th, errors occurred in the ticket reservation and issuance systems of Eastar Jet, Jeju Air, and Air Premia.
It was confirmed that these errors occurred because the Navitaire system, a subsidiary of the German company Amadeus used by these three airlines, operates based on MS's cloud service. Currently, errors are occurring in ticket reservations both online and offline, and airport staff are manually issuing tickets and conducting check-ins. As a result, waiting times for procedures are reportedly increasing.
However, Incheon International Airport uses its own built cloud system and is not affected in airport operations. Self check-in services within the airport are also operating normally.
Some online games serviced domestically are also affected by this incident. Pearl Abyss's 'Black Desert' management announced on their homepage notice, "Due to a sudden equipment malfunction, 'Black Desert' server instability has occurred," and added, "It has been confirmed as a simultaneous global failure of the software program in use, and normalization work is underway." Accordingly, Pearl Abyss took down the 'Black Desert' servers from 2:30 PM to 7 PM for emergency maintenance.
Gravity, a domestic game company that services PC and mobile games such as 'Ragnarok Online' and 'Ragnarok Origin,' also experienced disruptions in game access including their official homepage from the afternoon of the same day. Gravity announced, "Due to a system error provided by a third party, the homepage and game access are unavailable, and temporary maintenance is underway," and started system maintenance from 2 PM.
According to the gaming industry, some games serviced through MS's Xbox console and PC Game Pass also experienced server failures from the morning of the same day, making smooth gameplay impossible.
The information and communications (IT) authorities are closely monitoring the situation to assess the potential damage to domestic information technology services based on MS cloud.
It is understood that public institutions mostly use domestic providers such as Naver and KT Cloud, so no confusion has occurred. However, among the general public, including office workers and students using Windows PCs, damages due to the disruption have occurred.
According to major foreign media such as AFP and Reuters, due to the MS cloud service disruption, flights were canceled in the United States, Australia, and Germany, and major broadcasters and mobile carriers experienced operational difficulties, causing similar damages worldwide.
