Uljin County Urges Inclusion of 'East-West Trans-Korea Railway' in the 5th National Rail Network Plan for Regional Economic Revitalization

Seosan City-Uljin County, Meeting of 13 City and County Leaders' Cooperation Council

Uljin County in North Gyeongsang Province attended the 9th meeting of the cooperation body of 13 local government mayors and county heads, held in Jeungpyeong County, North Chungcheong Province on the 17th, together with over 100 participants including advisory committee members and research agencies. The discussion focused on the prompt advancement of the Central Region East-West Cross-Country Railway Construction Project.

The Central Region East-West Cross-Country Railway Construction Project is a large-scale national project with an estimated total length of 330km and a total budget of 7 trillion won. It connects 13 cities and counties across three provinces: South Chungcheong (Seosan, Dangjin, Yesan, Asan, Cheonan), North Chungcheong (Cheongju, Jeungpyeong, Goesan), and North Gyeongsang (Mungyeong, Yecheon, Yeongju, Bonghwa, Uljin). The project aims to connect the West Coast's new industrial belt, known as the "waist" economic zone, with the East Coast's tourism belt, thereby achieving balanced national development.

The meeting proceeded with the final report on the preliminary feasibility study for the project, followed by discussions on reflecting the project in the 5th National Rail Network Construction Plan and the future direction for project implementation.

In addition, local National Assembly members are jointly sponsoring a "Special Bill for the Construction of the Central Region East-West Cross-Country Railway" to support measures such as exemption from the preliminary feasibility study for this project.

County Governor Son Byeongbok stated, "The Central Region East-West Cross-Country Railway Construction Project is essential for strengthening transportation connectivity and balanced economic development in the central region, which serves as the waist of the nation’s economy. Together with the 13 cities and counties, we reaffirm our commitment and will continue to make efforts for its swift implementation."
