Possible Change in Position Mentioned During Re-vote in the Ruling Party
Ahn Cheol-soo Sticks to Original Stance
"Possible Bipartisan Agreement or Third-party Special Prosecutor Needed"
On the 19th, Ahn Cheol-soo, a member of the People Power Party, stated regarding the Chae Sang-byeong special prosecutor law that "my conviction remains unchanged." Although he voted against the party's stance opposing the special prosecutor law and a disciplinary proposal was submitted to the party's ethics committee, he said that if a re-vote occurs, he would cast a 'yes' vote.
On the same day, Ahn appeared on BBS Radio to share his position on the Chae Sang-byeong special prosecutor law. He said, "When I cast a 'yes' vote last time, I believed that the best option was for the ruling and opposition parties to reach an agreement, and if that was not possible, the second-best option was for a third party, not aligned with either side, to recommend the special prosecutor," adding, "In any case, I voted 'yes' because I thought a special prosecutor was necessary."
Earlier, there were speculations within the People Power Party that Ahn might change his stance on the Chae Sang-byeong special prosecutor law. Kwak Kyu-taek, the party's chief spokesperson, said on MBC Radio the previous day, "As the Democratic Party repeatedly pushed for impeachment and a special prosecutor recently, Ahn seems to have somewhat understood that these are 'too political claims,'" and added, "We expect Ahn to change his position during the re-vote."
Ahn, whose potential change of position had drawn attention, reaffirmed that he would maintain his existing stance.
He said, "Going forward, if possible, I believe the ruling and opposition parties should reach an agreement, or if that does not work well, since the Party for National Innovation and Transformation, which advocates for recommending a third-party special prosecutor, has said they will relinquish their recommendation rights, I think the Democratic Party has no reason not to agree to a third-party special prosecutor if this is not merely a political attack but a sincere effort to uncover the truth behind the death of the young Chae Sang-byeong."
