Gochang-gun, Jeollabuk-do announced on the 18th that it successfully held various sports events in the first half of this year, generating an estimated 4 billion KRW in regional economic ripple effects.
During the first half of the year, the county successfully hosted five nationwide sports competitions, one provincial-level sports competition, and thirteen county-level sports competitions.
Additionally, by attracting training camps from 16 teams, athletes, officials, parents, and cheering squads flocked to local accommodations and restaurants.
It is estimated that about 25,000 visitors came to Gochang-gun, resulting in more than 4 billion KRW in direct and indirect regional economic revitalization effects.
In February, the "3rd Gochang Dolmen Cup National Youth Baseball Tournament" was held, with 38 teams and approximately 700 players participating.
In May, the "22nd Korea Women’s Taekwondo Federation President’s National Taekwondo Competition" took place, attracting about 3,500 athletes competing in sparring, breaking, and poomsae events, drawing nationwide attention.
In the second half of the year, the county plans to utilize its excellent sports infrastructure to host various nationwide competitions such as the "Gochang Bokbunja Cup National Badminton Tournament," "Korea University National Taekwondo Competition," "Gochang Seonunsan Cup National Youth Baseball Tournament," and the "Gochang Dolmen Marathon."
Moreover, programs linking sports and local tourism will be operated, including on-site experiential learning at the Seonunsan Tree Climbing Center and climbing classes for group tourists.
Especially for competitions with significant economic impact, the county plans to pursue multi-year contracts to continue sustainable sports marketing efforts, aiming to contribute to the revitalization of Gochang-gun’s regional economy.
County Governor Shim Deok-seop stated, “Through sports marketing, the county is focusing on revitalizing the local economy and enhancing the county’s brand value. We will provide high-quality services and convenience to visiting athletes and their families so that Gochang, a UNESCO World Heritage city, can establish itself as the number one destination for sports tourism.”
