Smart Farm Installation on Rooftops of 16 Neighborhood Community Centers in Mapo-gu Smart Farm set up on the 1st floor of Mapo District Office building last September

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) is developing next-generation future farmers' smart farms on idle public facility sites, including 16 community centers in the second half of the year, aiming to foster Mapo-gu as a hub of smart agriculture.

Smart agriculture is a future farming technology that integrates information and communication technologies such as the Internet of Things, big data, artificial intelligence (AI), and robots into cultivation facilities to automatically control and manage the growth environment of crops.

It is gaining significant attention for its advantage of achieving high quality and production throughout all seasons with minimal labor, regardless of climate impact.

Accordingly, the district has determined that infrastructure is needed to allow experience of smart agriculture even in urban areas, and plans to utilize the rooftops of all community centers to create smart farms, serving as spaces for citizen experience and education.

The district will use idle spaces such as community center rooftops, which were mainly used as rooftop gardens, as locations for smart farm development. The size of the smart farm facilities to be built on community centers is approximately 16㎡.

The crops cultivated through the smart farms will be linked to welfare policies for Mapo-gu residents, such as participatory filial piety meals for seniors aged 75 and older. The district plans to start on-site surveys in July and sequentially install the facilities in the fourth quarter of this year.

The district expects that expanding smart farms locally will provide opportunities for all residents, including youth and young adults, to experience future agricultural technologies firsthand and serve as a foundation for creating future jobs related to smart agriculture.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “Smart agriculture is an unstoppable trend in future industries,” adding, “Mapo-gu will proactively embrace innovative technologies and reflect them in policies to actively establish a foundation for improving the quality of life and capabilities of Mapo-gu residents.”

Last September, Mapo-gu opened the approximately 10㎡ ‘Mapo-type Pollution ZERO Smart Farm’ on the first floor of the district office, cultivating lettuce, butterhead, romaine, basil, and more, providing an interesting attraction for visitors to the district office.
