Mapo-gu Underpass AI Flood Prevention System Shines During Heavy Rain

AI Flood Prevention System Activated Due to Heavy Rain on the 17th... Automatic Shutdown with Warning Message
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, "Proactive AI System Adoption to Make Mapo Resilient to Disasters"

Mapo-gu Underpass AI Flood Prevention System Shines During Heavy Rain

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Kang-su) has seen the effectiveness of the AI (Artificial Intelligence) flood prevention system for underground passages, the first of its kind introduced by a Seoul autonomous district.

On July 17 at around 8:45 a.m., heavy rain poured across Seoul, and a heavy rain warning was issued. A large amount of rain fell in a short period, causing traffic congestion on roads and rapid swelling of rivers.

The water level of World Cup Stream in Mapo-gu also rose sharply, and as water began to flood the adjacent underground passage, the AI flood prevention system issued a “danger” warning message and voice alert.

At the same time, the barrier gate automatically activated immediately, controlling vehicles attempting to enter the underground passage and preventing flooding accidents.

In September last year, Mapo-gu installed the AI flood prevention system in the World Cup Stream underground passage located next to the river to prepare for rapidly changing weather conditions.

This was based on the judgment that the existing vehicle control barrier gates were manually operated by people assessing water levels, making immediate accident response difficult.

The AI flood prevention system monitors flooding status using water level gauges installed along the World Cup Stream and in the underground passage, collects and analyzes video information with infrared cameras, and automatically controls access to the underground passage.

Additionally, it is equipped with a function to predict flooding through continuous deep learning.

A district official stated, “The vehicle control barrier gates automatically operated according to water level stages, enabling swift and accurate measures during heavy rain. Mapo-gu will thoroughly prepare for disaster situations by monitoring underground passage conditions and water levels 24/7 at the Disaster Safety Situation Room alongside the AI flood prevention system.”

Furthermore, to prevent flood damage to residents, Mapo-gu has installed transparent flood barriers that combine safety and aesthetics in 378 semi-basement households since last year, and is also making every effort to manage rainwater inlets for smooth drainage during heavy rain.

Park Kang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We will do our best to make Mapo a disaster- and accident-resilient district 365 days a year through the proactive introduction of AI systems.”

Mapo-gu also announced that the six AI crowd management systems installed in the heavily trafficked Hongdae Red Road have played their roles effectively during events like Halloween and year-end holidays, protecting residents’ safety 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
