Prosecutors Appeal Suspended Sentence of Man in 30s Who Fed Marijuana Jelly

3-Year Prison Sentence Requested in First Trial

A man in his 30s who was charged with distributing jelly containing cannabis to acquaintances was given a suspended prison sentence in the first trial, prompting the prosecution to appeal.

The Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office announced on the 17th that it has filed an appeal against the first trial verdict for Mr. A, who was charged with violating the Narcotics Control Act.

The prosecution stated the reason for the appeal, saying, "The defendant not only consumed the cannabis jelly himself but also provided it to acquaintances," and "considering the need for a strict response to recent new types of drug crimes."

Earlier, the first trial court sentenced Mr. A to 1 year and 6 months in prison with a 3-year suspension. The prosecution had requested a 3-year prison sentence.

Mr. A is accused of handing over jelly containing cannabis to three university classmates, including Mr. B, at a restaurant in Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, last April. Two of them who ate the jelly complained of dizziness and were taken to the hospital.
