As the deck of Yudeunggyo Bridge in Daejeon collapsed due to heavy rain, resulting in a complete closure to vehicles and others, the police awarded a commendation to the citizen who made the initial report.
The Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency announced on the 16th that they had presented a commendation to Mr. Kim (44), the first citizen to report to the police after discovering that part of the pier of Yudeunggyo Bridge had subsided and the deck had collapsed.
On the morning of the 10th, when a heavy rain warning was in effect and more than 100mm of torrential rain had fallen, Mr. Kim was commuting to work as usual using Yudeunggyo Bridge. As he was passing the middle of the bridge, his car suddenly tilted, and he was momentarily unable to steer. Sensing something was wrong, he stopped and got out right after crossing the bridge, only to discover that the middle section of the bridge had collapsed. He immediately called 112 to report the situation. Thanks to his prompt action, the police were able to implement appropriate control measures and prevent what could have been a much more serious accident.
An official from the Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "Yudeunggyo Bridge, a major arterial road in Daejeon with about 47,000 vehicles passing daily, was able to be immediately and fully closed by the police thanks to the quick report from the citizen. If the closure had been delayed and more vehicles had crossed, the added weight could have caused the bridge to collapse, leading to a very dangerous situation."
