Installed at three locations: trailheads frequently used by residents, Donghaeng Forest Path, and Forest Library
Full efforts for malaria prevention including rapid diagnostic testing and pest insecticide installation
Gwangjin-gu (District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho) is taking proactive measures to eradicate malaria, which is concentrated during the summer season.
Malaria is an infectious disease transmitted when mosquitoes infected with the malaria parasite bite humans. The main symptoms include chills, high fever, sweating, and fever reduction recurring every 48 hours, accompanied by headaches, diarrhea, and vomiting. Gwangjin-gu had 1 malaria patient last year and 3 patients the year before, intensifying efforts for malaria prevention and eradication activities.
First, the district installed three mosquito repellent dispensers around Achasan. They were placed at the entrance of the Achasan hiking trail, around Donghaeng Forest Path, and at the Forest Library to allow easy access for residents passing by. Spraying on clothes or shoes while avoiding the face or neck creates a distance that blocks mosquitoes as well as other pests like ticks.
In addition, the district operates 218 pest insecticide devices and has installed 5 digital mosquito measuring devices to strengthen quarantine efforts.
Also, Gwangjin-gu is conducting rapid malaria diagnostic tests for residents until October. Residents who show malaria symptoms or have visited risk areas and wish to be tested can visit the health center with their ID to receive a rapid diagnostic test.
A health center official emphasized the importance of following prevention guidelines to avoid mosquito bites, including ▲using mosquito repellent ▲avoiding nighttime activities ▲wearing light-colored long clothing ▲and washing well after outdoor activities.
Kim Kyung-ho, Mayor of Gwangjin-gu, said, “If you suspect malaria infection symptoms, please get tested promptly at the health center or the nearest medical institution.” He added, “We are fully committed to the health and safety of residents through thorough quarantine and proactive measures. We ask all residents to carefully follow the prevention guidelines.”
