The establishment of Guun Station (tentative name) on the ‘Shinbundang Line extension project from Gwanggyo to Homaesil section’ is gaining significant momentum.
On the 16th, Suwon City in Gyeonggi Province announced that it signed a consignment agreement with the Korea Rail Network Authority, the project implementer for the construction of Guun Station, at the Suwon City Hall situation room, agreeing to actively cooperate to ensure smooth progress of the project.
According to the agreement, Suwon City will bear the entire cost of the Guun Station construction project, while the Korea Rail Network Authority will be responsible for the construction work.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport had previously approved the ‘Guun Station establishment’ requested by Suwon City on May 21.
The Shinbundang Line extension project, which extends the 9.88 km section from Gwanggyo to Homaesil, has been officially underway since the implementation plan approval was announced in June.
For over 10 years, Suwon City has continuously requested the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to add Guun Station through the ‘Feasibility Study for Additional Installation of Guun Station,’ and in June 2020, it also signed a ‘Joint Response Agreement for Additional Installation of Guun Station’ with Baek Hye-ryun, a member of the National Assembly representing Suwon-si Eul.
The area around Guun-dong, where Guun Station will be newly established, is densely populated with apartment complexes and has high public transportation demand due to the presence of Seosuwon Bus Terminal, large marts, and Ilwol Arboretum. It is also close to the Suwon R&D Science Park, which Suwon City is promoting in cooperation with Sungkyunkwan University, so public transportation demand is expected to increase further.
Lee Jae-jun, Mayor of Suwon City, stated, "The Shinbundang Line extension from Gwanggyo to Homaesil, which includes Guun Station, will be a catalyst for the development of not only West Suwon but also the entire city of Suwon. We will use the Shinbundang Line extension as a stepping stone to create the future of West Suwon."
