Seoul Metro Conducted On-Site Inspection at Seongsu Station on the 12th, Plans to Establish New Entrance
Seongdong District Mayor Hopes for Prompt Establishment of Seongsu Station Entrance to Ensure Citizen Safety and Requests Best Efforts for Safety Measures

Seongdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeong Won-oh) welcomed the Seoul Metro's expression of willingness to actively consider adding new exits at Seongsu Station to ensure citizen safety.
As Seongsu-dong has achieved remarkable development, the floating population around Seongsu Station has also surged. However, there are only four exits that were established when Seongsu Station first opened, causing significant inconvenience to users and posing safety risks.
Seongdong-gu has long recognized this issue and has continuously requested Seoul Metro since 2021 to expand the exits to reduce congestion. However, the expansion was not pursued due to reasons such as lower priority compared to other stations and low business feasibility.
Nevertheless, since citizen safety is an utmost priority that cannot be overlooked, the district secured additional budget from Seoul City this year to conduct a feasibility study again and plans to complete the study within the year.
Since the 11th, two safety personnel have been stationed at exits 2 and 3 of Seongsu Station during peak weekday commuting hours to ensure pedestrian safety. However, concerns about crowding around Seongsu Station remain high.
In response, Seoul Metro visited Seongsu Station on the 12th for an on-site inspection. They reviewed the congestion levels and improvement measures for the station exits and discussed plans such as adding new exits. On that day, Seoul Metro stated that they would do their best to prepare measures including new exits to provide safe and comfortable use.
Since transit-oriented areas like Seongsu Station can pose safety threats if the increase in users is not properly addressed, Seongdong-gu highly welcomes Seoul Metro’s intention to prepare plans such as adding new exits.
They also expressed hope that thorough measures will be taken to ensure safe management until the installation is completed.
Meanwhile, Seongdong-gu plans to actively utilize the intelligent unmanned camera (CCTV) system for crowd control and the crowd management alert system established last year. In coordination with Seoul City, fire stations, and police stations, they will continue proactive on-site management during crowding at Seongsu Station exits and the Seongsu-dong cafe street area.
Additionally, the crowd density information kiosks and electronic display boards installed near exits 3 and 4 of Seongsu Station and Yeonmujang-gil will be continuously used to encourage crowd dispersion in the area.
Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “We have earnestly hoped for the fundamental solution to the crowding problem at Seongsu Station, which is the addition of subway exits. Seongdong-gu welcomes Seoul Metro’s proactive approach to preparing plans such as adding new exits at Seongsu Station and hopes that the installation will be completed promptly.”
