Decision on Detention Expected Late Afternoon

The director who caused a 5-year-old child attending a Taekwondo academy to fall into cardiac arrest and unconsciousness underwent a pre-trial detention hearing.

On the afternoon of the 14th, the male director in his 30s, Mr. A, who appeared at the pre-trial detention hearing held at the Uijeongbu District Court, did not respond to media questions such as "Do you still deny intentionality?" and "Do you have anything to say to the bereaved family?" and entered the courthouse.

Even after the approximately two-hour hearing, Mr. A did not answer questions like "Why did you delete the CCTV footage?" and "Do you admit to the charges?" and left. It is expected that the decision on whether to detain Mr. A will be made late that afternoon.

Earlier, on the afternoon of the 12th, Mr. A is accused of lifting a 5-year-old child, Mr. B, who was a member of the Taekwondo academy he operates in Yangju-si, Gyeonggi Province, placing him upside down on a rolled-up mat, and leaving him unattended. Mr. B was found in cardiac arrest and was transported to the hospital but is currently unconscious.

The police detected signs of child abuse charges against Mr. A and made an emergency arrest, applying for an arrest warrant on charges of child abuse causing serious injury under the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes. It is also reported that the police found evidence that Mr. A deleted the Taekwondo academy's CCTV footage after the incident.
