At around 6:10 p.m. (Eastern Time) during his campaign speech criticizing the Biden administration's illegal immigration policies, several gunshots sounded like popcorn popping from somewhere.
Immediately after touching the back of his right neck with his right hand, Trump quickly ducked under the podium, and several bodyguards rushed up to the stage to protect him.
The gunshots continued intermittently, and people watching the rally behind the stage screamed and some ducked down. Some voters appeared confused, unable to grasp what was happening.
AP reported that the suspected gunshots came from the left side of the stage and that police began evacuating the crowd afterward. The New York Times, CNN, and others reported that "Trump appears to have been injured (by the shooting)."
Surrounded by bodyguards, Trump later stood up and raised his fist to supporters, who cheered in response.
Trump then descended from the stage with the support of his bodyguards, and blood was observed above his right ear. He subsequently left the rally site by car.
However, it was not immediately confirmed whether the blood near his ear was a direct result of the gunfire or caused while hiding behind the podium. On X (formerly Twitter), thousands of posts appeared in succession saying, "Pray for Trump," "Trump was shot," and "God bless Trump."
