Gyeonggi Province Governor Kim Dong-yeon strongly condemned the Ministry of Unification for accusing Gyeonggi Province of being illegal for cracking down on anti-North Korea leaflets.
On the 12th, during a visit to Sinan County, Jeollanam-do, Governor Kim was asked about his stance on a front-page report by The Hankyoreh newspaper that day. He said, "I strongly condemn and warn the Ministry of Unification's attempt to accuse Gyeonggi Province of being illegal for cracking down on anti-North Korea leaflets," adding, "Which country's Ministry of Unification is this that obstructs efforts to protect the safety of border areas and peace on the Korean Peninsula?"
He continued, "As the governor of Gyeonggi Province, I cannot tolerate any attempts that threaten the safety and peace of the residents," and urged, "I strongly warn the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and the Ministry of Unification to please return to normalcy."
Furthermore, he added, "I will do everything for the safety and peace of the residents."
Earlier, The Hankyoreh reported on its front page under the headline "Ministry of Unification seeking illegal reasons to prevent crackdown on anti-North Korea leaflets," stating that "the Ministry of Unification requested law firms and legal experts in late last month to provide legal review opinions pointing out that the Ministry of Unification's crackdown measures on anti-North Korea leaflet distribution by Gyeonggi Province and Paju City are 'unconstitutional and illegal.'"
