Trump Opposes Support for Ukraine War
Ukraine is pushing to hold a second Ukraine peace conference before the U.S. presidential election this November. This move is seen as a response to the growing concern over the possibility of former U.S. President Donald Trump, who opposes military aid to Ukraine, regaining power.
According to Bloomberg on the 11th (local time), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who visited to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, stated in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Foundation the day before, "The world is watching November. Vladimir Putin (Russian President) is committing murder and destruction in preparation for the outcome in November." He added, "Holding a second peace conference based on a peace formula requires the help of the United States."
Former President Trump has opposed U.S. military support and declared that if elected, he would end the Ukraine war before his inauguration in January next year. On the other hand, Ukraine believes that former President Trump might pressure for a peace agreement that undermines its sovereignty and territory.
Russia questions the legitimacy of President Zelensky, who extended his term without an election under martial law. Because of this, it is highly unlikely that Russian leadership, including President Putin, will attend the peace conference hosted by President Zelensky.
In particular, President Putin has set Ukraine's withdrawal from Russian-occupied territories and abandonment of NATO membership as conditions for a ceasefire, while Ukraine and Western countries insist they cannot cede pre-war territories, leading to a standoff.
Earlier, Ukraine held a peace conference last month in Switzerland attended by 83 countries and organizations, but Russia and China did not participate. Additionally, about ten countries that are either members of or seeking to join BRICS, the emerging economies alliance led by China and Russia, did not sign the joint declaration.
