Agreed to Cooperate in Five Areas Including Regional Industry Promotion, Education, and Talent Development
Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Lee Byeong-no) and Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST, President Lim Ki-chul) have joined hands to promote regional culture and tourism development using advanced science and technology.
According to Damyang-gun on the 11th, about 10 people attended the agreement ceremony with GIST held the day before, including Governor Lee Byeong-no, Administrative Director Kang Kyung-won, Planning and Budget Office Director Han Yeon-deok, GIST President Lim Ki-chul, Vice President for External Affairs Jeong Yong-hwa, and Kim Kyung-joong, Director of the Korea Culture Technology Institute (Professor of Convergence Technology Interdisciplinary Department).
According to the agreement, the two institutions will cooperate to develop and operate programs for regional culture development and tourism revitalization to foster local industries.
To utilize advanced science and technology, they will collaborate on education, technology cooperation, and joint research in artificial intelligence (AI), metaverse, robotics, and jointly cooperate to discover government 4th industrial revolution-related linked projects and select public projects.
They will also work together on educational cooperation for the development of education in Damyang-gun and nurturing local talent, including cooperating on the establishment of the GIST Technology Management MBA (GTMBA) curriculum and selecting scholarship students.
Damyang-gun plans to create an AI-based digital theme park by 2027 (scheduled). Through collaboration with GIST, they plan to develop major tourist sites such as Juknokwon into digital theme parks to provide new attractions for tourists and promote stay-type tourism revitalization.
GIST President Lim Ki-chul said, “In the digital economy era, we are always considering ways to utilize GIST’s technology, knowledge, and industrial experience for regional and national economic development,” adding, “If GIST’s AI and digital technology are applied to Damyang-gun’s cultural and tourism content, it will greatly invigorate tourist attraction and the local economy.”
Damyang-gun Governor Lee Byeong-no said, “Damyang-gun is striving to expand the stay-type living population to revitalize the local economy,” and added, “We will create a city of diverse experiential and stay-type tourism infrastructure by integrating GIST’s advanced science technologies such as artificial intelligence into Damyang-gun’s cultural tourism industry.”
