Mokpo Coast Guard Takes Proactive Measures to Prevent Maritime Accidents

Summer Water Play Peak Season, Life-saving Training Conducted for Safety Management Personnel

Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oh-seong) Jido Substation announced on the 11th that, with the peak summer water recreation season approaching, it conducted an on-site inspection of coastal waters and life-saving training for safety management personnel on the 10th to prevent coastal accidents ahead of the beach opening.

The ‘Dolmeori Beach’ located within the jurisdiction of Jido Substation is scheduled to open on the 12th and operate for 35 days until the 15th of next month, with an expected increase in water recreation visitors.

Accordingly, Jido Substation conducted a preliminary inspection of safety facilities in the coastal waters to improve deficiencies and provided life-saving training, including equipment operation and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), to beach safety management personnel.

During the beach operation period, a maritime patrol team will be operated centered on police officers holding professional life-saving certifications to prepare for marine accidents. To ensure no delays in emergency response, thorough inspections of rescue equipment such as coastal rescue boats and rescue surfboards will be conducted, and preventive patrols will be strengthened focusing on vulnerable coastal areas.

Last year, there were 651 coastal accidents nationwide, and among the 1,008 drowning victims, only 139 people (14%) wore life jackets. There is a need to raise mature safety awareness among water recreation visitors regarding the wearing of life jackets, which can save lives at sea.

A Mokpo Maritime Police official stated, “During the peak summer water recreation season, we will strengthen patrols focusing on safety-vulnerable areas such as beaches and breakwaters, and do our best to manage coastal safety without blind spots through thorough preliminary inspections.”
