'27th On-site Island Forum' Response Visit
Listening to Excellent Island Tourism Cases such as Sinan Purple Island and Jaeun-do
The Korea Island Development Institute and residents of Baengnyeongdo Island reunited in Mokpo after 22 days. This was a reciprocal visit by the island residents following the ‘27th On-site Forum Visiting Islands’ held on June 18 in Baengnyeongdo, Ongjin-gun, Incheon.
The Korea Island Development Institute (KIDI, Director Oh Dong-ho) announced that on the 10th, a visit event was held at the KIDI Hall on the 3rd floor of the Mokpo office building, attended by about 20 people including village chiefs and island residents of Baengnyeongdo, as well as officials from Baengnyeong-myeon.
The event was conducted under the chairmanship of Director Oh Dong-ho, featuring presentations on KIDI’s vision and tasks, followed by a tour of the office building.
Prior to this, the Baengnyeongdo island residents visited Shinan’s ‘Purple Island’ (Banwol and Bakji Islands), selected as the world’s best tourism village, the ‘1004 Museum Park’ on Jaeun Island, and the Mokpo Marine Cable Car.
Although geographically different, the visit was arranged to listen to and benchmark Shinan’s excellent island tourism cases that turned crises into opportunities.
KIDI plans to designate Baengnyeongdo as the ‘Island of Peace’ and promote it, based on feedback from the relevant local governments and island residents.
Oh Dong-ho, Director of KIDI, said, “Along with Yeonpyeongdo, the ‘Island of Security,’ we will make Baengnyeongdo, a strategic point among the five West Sea islands, the ‘Island of Peace.’ We will continuously cooperate and exchange with related organizations such as KIDI and Ongjin-gun, Incheon, to elevate the status of ‘K-Islands.’”
Meanwhile, the ‘27th On-site Forum Visiting Islands’ was held on June 18 in Baengnyeongdo, Ongjin-gun, Incheon. Through the forum, opinions were presented on ▲(transport infrastructure improvement) the inability to load vehicles between the mainland and Baengnyeongdo due to the scrapping of vessels caused by aging car ferries ▲(security issues) damages suffered by island residents due to the ‘Special Act on Support for the Five West Sea Islands’ and North Korea’s GPS jamming attacks ▲(tourism activation) the need for measures against overtourism due to increased tourists following the construction of Baengnyeong Airport.
