Dongmyung University, Park Bokja's "Sunflower" Wins Grand Prize at Cheongnam Calligraphy National Competition

The 35th Year: Foundation of K-Calligraphy Culture

The 35th Cheongnam Calligraphy Grand Prize National Contest, co-hosted by Dongmyung University and Cheongnam Munhwa, awarded the Grand Prize to the literary painting "Sunflower" by artist Park Bokja.

The Grand Prize winner receives a prize of 3 million KRW.

The Excellence Awards (three recipients, each receiving 500,000 KRW) went to: ▲Jang Sangsoo (Hangul cursive) "Mengja-ui Deungmungongha" ▲Lee Jewook (Chinese regular script) "Hwang Hyun-sensei's Poem" ▲Hwang Yoonjoo (folk painting) "Pajodo".

The Special Awards (three recipients, each receiving 300,000 KRW) were awarded to: ▲Park Chuha (Chinese seal script) "Goun-sensei's Poem" ▲Pyo Sehwan (literary painting) "Crab" ▲Seong Sucheol (Hangul cursive) "Yong Haewon's Poem Family".

The Honorable Mention recipients were Han Jingyu, Park Kyungok, Ha Taeo, Kim Jaeseong, Hong Jonguk, Jang Moonjeong, Jo Bunnyeom, Son Changho, Choi Myungsoo, Kang Daesoon, Lee Yundo, Song Youngsim, Lee Jiseon, Song Jaekyung, Kim Younghee, and Shin Soonhwa.

Chief Judge Yoon Jongcheol commented in his review, "Since this was an on-site calligraphy contest, the participants' efforts were clearly visible in their works," adding, "The Hangul works maintained the usual standard, the Chinese character works included some outstanding pieces but a few were disqualified due to errors, and the literary paintings showed a noticeable increase in quality."

He also stated, "I hope this 35th competition will become a cornerstone for the global K-calligraphy culture."

The award-winning works from the Cheongnam Calligraphy Grand Prize National Contest will be exhibited at the first floor exhibition hall of the Busan Design Promotion Agency from August 19 to 24. The awards ceremony will take place at the same location on August 24 at 2 p.m.

The Cheongnam Calligraphy Grand Prize was established to widely promote the calligraphic spirit of Cheongnam Oh Jebong, a calligrapher selected by Busan City as one of the "Figures who illuminated 20th-century Busan," and to expand calligraphy and provide opportunities for emerging calligraphers.
