"I will officially give Joe (Joe Biden, U.S. President) a chance to restore his honor in front of the whole world." Former U.S. President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump proposed a debate and an 18-hole golf match to his rival, President Biden, who is under pressure to withdraw. Trump stated that if he loses the golf match, he would donate $1 million to a charity chosen by President Biden.
This Week's Man-to-Man Debate Proposal... '$1 Million' Golf Bet
According to congressional media outlet The Hill and others, former President Trump made this proposal on the 9th (local time) while attending a rally in Doral, Florida. He said, "Let's have another debate this week so that 'Sleepy Joe (Biden)' can prove to people around the world that he is qualified to be president," adding, "But this time, it will be man-to-man, with no moderator and no restrictions." He continued, "Just name the place," and added, "Anytime, anywhere."
President Biden, who has been nominated as the Democratic presidential candidate to face Trump, has faced intense calls for withdrawal amid controversies over his age and cognitive decline following the first presidential candidate TV debate held last month. However, he strongly expressed his intention to complete the presidential race, saying, "I am not going anywhere. I am the best candidate to beat Trump."
The Hill assessed that Trump's proposal is unlikely to materialize considering President Biden's schedule this week. Biden is currently in Washington, D.C. to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit and is scheduled to campaign in Detroit on the 12th, shortly after. Additionally, the second official TV debate between Biden and Trump is scheduled for September.
Furthermore, regarding the golf exchange during the previous TV debate, former President Trump said, "President Biden said he wanted to try me on the golf course, can you believe that?" and proposed an 18-hole golf match at his golf course. He said, "It will be one of the most-watched sports events in history," adding, "If he wins, I will donate $1 million to the charity he chooses. And I guarantee he will not accept this offer."
Fox News evaluated that the golf exchange between the two was one of the most talked-about parts of last month's TV debate. At that time, former President Trump claimed in response to age criticism, "I have won the club championship twice. He (Biden) can't even hit 50 yards," while President Biden countered, "I want to see who can hit the ball farther," stating he had a handicap of 6 during his vice presidency. He later corrected it to a handicap of 8, but Trump, known as a golf enthusiast, said, "That's a lie," and did not believe it.
Trump Also Belittles 'Biden Alternative' Harris
At the rally that day, former President Trump said, "The radical left Democrats are in chaos and undergoing a total collapse because they cannot decide who among the candidates is unfit to be president," sarcastically adding, "Is it Sleepy Joe, or Laffin' Kamala (Vice President Kamala Harris)?"
During this, Trump repeatedly mispronounced Vice President Harris's name and showed disdain by saying she would be a "weak opponent." He also claimed, "Vice President Harris and the Democrats conspired in an evil plot to deceive the American people about the cognitive abilities of the person (Biden) in the White House office." Regarding Vice President Harris, who is considered a strong Plan B for the Democrats, he belittled her by saying, "She has never been to the border," and "Choosing her as vice president was a smart choice."
In a Bendix & Armandi poll released that day by Politico, Vice President Harris (42%) was shown to lead former President Trump (41%) by 1 percentage point if she were to run as the Democratic candidate. In a head-to-head match against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Harris was also expected to defeat Trump with 43% to 41%. On the other hand, President Biden, who is under pressure to withdraw, was trailing Trump by 1 percentage point with 42% to 43%.
Biden Camp: 'No Time to Waste on Trump's Weird Antics'
However, the Biden camp dismissed former President Trump's proposal for a debate and golf match as "Trump’s weird antics."
James Singer, a spokesperson for Biden's campaign, said in a statement, "Former President Trump disappeared from the public eye for 12 days, then invited fictional serial killers to dinner, mocked little Marco Rubio, praised Tom Horman, the architect of Project 2025, and challenged the American president (Biden) to a golf match," sarcastically adding, "President Biden has no time to waste on Trump's weird antics." He continued, "He is busy leading America and defending the free world. Former President Trump is a liar, a convicted criminal, and a con artist who works only for himself," criticizing him.
Meanwhile, before the rally that day, when asked about media reports that Senator Rubio from Florida might be nominated as the vice-presidential candidate, former President Trump said, "I don't know."
