"I Forgot to Mention I Couldn't Go"...What a Corporate Employee Said in the '50 Million Won Eel No-Show' Case

Employee of Major Corporation No-Shows After Reserving 10kg of Eel
"Forgot to Say I Couldn't Come" Table Setting Already Done
Partial Payment Requested, "Can't You Even Allow That?"

Controversy has arisen over claims that employees of a large corporation who booked a group meal but did not show up instead verbally abused and threatened the restaurant owner. On the 9th, JTBC's Incident Report shared the story of Mr. A, who runs an eel restaurant in Bupyeong, Incheon. He said that on the 3rd, he received a call from Mr. B, an employee of a nearby large factory, stating that about 20 people planned to visit around 4 p.m. on the 4th. It was reported that 10kg of eel worth 540,000 won had been reserved.

However, on the day of the reservation, the employees did not arrive at the promised time. Having already partially grilled the eel and set the table, the restaurant contacted Mr. B, who replied that he had forgotten to inform them that they could not come. According to Mr. A, the factory employees had visited the restaurant about twice a month, and since Mr. B made the reservation himself, no prepayment was made.

When Mr. A requested 300,000 won, part of the order amount, due to the sudden cancellation, Mr. B said, "I will gather people by 5 p.m." and asked to "leave the table as it is." Nevertheless, the factory employees did not show up even after 5 p.m. When Mr. A contacted Mr. B again, another employee, Mr. C, answered the phone. It was then that Mr. C’s verbal abuse began.

According to Mr. A, Mr. C threatened, "Can't you even overlook this? Do you not want to do business with a (large corporation)?" Angered, Mr. A asked, "Why do you do such trashy things to small business owners?" to which Mr. C replied, "Yes, I am trash." In the end, Mr. A reportedly gave some of the prepared eel to acquaintances who visited the restaurant and discarded the rest.

However, Mr. B stated that he had never committed a no-show. He told JTBC that a no-show is when "there is no contact at all or when someone maliciously does not show up at the restaurant." He also added, "I don’t know how the restaurant handled the food, so 300,000 won is too large an amount," and apologized for not informing them in advance. Mr. C, who had a verbal dispute with Mr. A, explained, "I was emotional because I was drunk," and said, "The owner called me 'trash' first, and I was just asking for some consideration since I run a local business."

The company involved told JTBC, "We will make efforts such as training to raise the etiquette level of our employees to prevent such incidents from recurring."
