On the 9th, Naju City in Jeollanam-do announced that it will expand the coverage items of the ‘Naju Citizen Safety Insurance’.
Implemented since 2017, the Naju Citizen Safety Insurance is a social safety net system for all citizens who suffer damage from unexpected accidents, disasters, or crimes during daily life.
All citizens, including foreigners registered as residents in the city, are automatically enrolled without a separate subscription fee, and overlapping benefits are possible regardless of personal insurance subscriptions.
In cases of death or permanent disability (permanent impairment) from any of the 32 coverage items, insurance payments of up to 20 million KRW are provided.
Until last year, 24 items such as death from natural disaster injuries were covered, but this year, 8 additional items have been added.
The additional items include ‘bicycle death and permanent disability (up to 20 million KRW) and consolation money for diagnosis over 4 weeks (200,000 KRW)’, ‘death and permanent disability from venomous animal contact accidents (up to 20 million KRW) and emergency room visit medical expenses (100,000 KRW)’, and ‘traffic accidents while walking on the road (including wheelchairs, electric mobility aids, inline skates, strollers, etc.).’
In particular, from May 1st, coverage for traffic accidents while walking on the road has become available.
If a pedestrian suffers death or permanent disability due to a collision or contact with a moving vehicle (including cargo) on the road, up to 20 million KRW will be paid.
Not only pedestrians but also people using wheelchairs, strollers, walking assistive chairs, inline (roller) skates, and kickboards are all included as pedestrians.
The insurance claim period is three years from the date of the accident. Claims can also be made for accidents occurring outside the city.
Previously, the city paid a total of 213.6 million KRW in insurance benefits for 29 cases last year, including various deaths, permanent disabilities, and emergency room treatment costs for dog bites.
This year, as of May 31, 21 cases amounting to 40.55 million KRW have been recorded.
Mayor Yoon Byung-tae said, “Although unexpected, disasters and accidents frequently occur in daily life, so we are expanding the coverage of citizen safety insurance every year. We will do our best to build a social safety net for disaster preparedness and accident prevention along with active promotion.”
