Due to heavy rain, Chungju Dam releases 1,100 tons and Daecheong Dam releases 1,000 tons of water

The Ministry of Environment announced on the 9th that it will release water through the sluice gates of four multipurpose dams, including Chungju Dam, to lower the dam water levels.

In the Hangang River basin, from 3 PM on the same day, the discharge from Chungju Dam will increase to 1,100 tons per second, and Hoengseong Dam to 40 tons per second. Currently, the two dams are releasing 770 tons per second and 2.25 tons per second respectively through power generation discharge. In the Geumgang River basin, the discharge from Daecheong Dam will increase from 240 tons per second to 1,000 tons per second starting at 2 PM, and in the Nakdonggang River basin, Imha Dam's discharge will expand from 100 tons per second to 300 tons per second.

At 2 PM the previous day, Boryeong Dam increased its discharge from 30 tons per second to 70 tons per second, and Yeongju Dam from 17.3 tons per second to 47.3 tons per second.

The Ministry of Environment explained the reason for the discharge, stating, "In recent days, heavy monsoon rains have fallen mainly in the Chungcheong and Gyeongbuk regions, causing dam water levels to continuously rise," and added, "Additional rainfall is expected nationwide on the 9th and 10th, as well as this weekend."

In preparation for the dam sluice gate discharge, the Ministry has instructed local governments to restrict access to riverbanks for downstream residents and visitors.

Park Jae-hyun, Director of Water Management Policy at the Ministry of Environment, said, "Before the heavy rains, we will secure sufficient water storage capacity in multipurpose dams and operate the dams flexibly to store as much water as possible during rainfall, doing our best to prevent downstream damage."
