Major Commercial Areas like Yongridan-gil, Itaewon, and Quy Nhon-gil
Hygiene Management Including High-Temperature Steam Cleaning 2-3 Times Monthly
Yongsan-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Park Hee-young) will begin cleaning dedicated food waste collection containers for small local restaurants over a five-month period starting this month. The pilot project targets approximately 700 small restaurants in four key commercial areas: Gyeongridan-gil, Itaewon World Food Street, Itaewon Quynon-gil, and Yongridan-gil.
Food waste collection containers have been vulnerable to odors during the summer and have faced ongoing complaints due to unsightly and unsanitary conditions. In response, the district has launched this container cleaning initiative. Since poorly maintained containers can breed bacteria and cause odors, this project aims to prioritize hygiene for residents.
A professional company will visit each alley directly using small cargo vehicles to clean and disinfect empty containers after food waste collection. Each restaurant will receive 2 to 3 steam cleanings per month to remove contaminants attached to the containers, followed by the application of disinfectants and wiping off moisture and residue with nonwoven fabric. During the project period, a total of 12 high-temperature steam cleanings and eco-friendly disinfections will be conducted. With professional management, regular maintenance in densely packed restaurant areas is expected to eliminate odors and improve urban aesthetics.
District Mayor Park Hee-young stated, “Through this pilot project, we will eliminate odors and pests from collection containers and improve the walking environment to minimize inconvenience for residents. We ask restaurant owners for their active cooperation in managing the collection containers.”
Meanwhile, the district plans to further enforce container management by promoting the “Mandatory Labeling of Business Names on Dedicated Food Waste Collection Containers for Small Restaurants” (Ordinance effective July 29, 2022).
