Repeated Clarifications in ABC Broadcast Interview... "Cold on the Day of Debate"
Determination to 'Finish the Race' Despite Resignation Pressure Inside and Outside the Democratic Party
Will "Definitely Respond" to Trump's Additional Debate Proposal
Facing pressure to withdraw his candidacy, U.S. President Joe Biden firmly drew the line on demands for a decision regarding his political future both inside and outside the Democratic Party.
On the 5th (local time), immediately after recording an interview with ABC News, President Biden told reporters that he "completely rules out" the possibility of withdrawing when asked about the possibility of stepping down as a candidate.
When asked why he believes he is the best candidate, he replied, "Because I have defeated Trump before." In response to a follow-up question, "Isn't that from four years ago?" he retorted, "You are wrong about everything."
Regarding reports that Democratic Senator Mark Warner is pushing a meeting with other senators to publicly call for Biden's withdrawal, he drew the line by saying, "It's just that one person." President Biden then asserted about former President Trump's proposal for additional debates, "I promise now. I will make it clear."
President Biden faced controversy over his health and cognitive decline due to old age after stammering and failing to form proper sentences during the first one-on-one debate with former President Trump on the 27th of last month.
Since immediately after the debate, voices demanding his decision to withdraw as a candidate have been growing both inside and outside the Democratic Party. So far, various polls have shown increasing doubts about President Biden's suitability for the presidency, and the gap in support widened in hypothetical matchups against former President Trump, but President Biden still insists on completing the race.
In some publicly released interview footage, President Biden repeatedly tried to dispel concerns about old age risks by saying he was suffering from a severe cold during the debate. President Biden explained the first TV debate with his competitor, former President Trump, by saying, "That (TV debate) was a bad anecdote," and "I was tired and couldn't listen to my instincts. It was a bad night."
This is the first time President Biden has directly interviewed with the media since the debate. In the interview, President Biden explained the situation at the time by saying, "I was sick," and "I felt terrible." He added, "In fact, the doctor tested me for COVID-19 and checked whether I had a viral infection," and "It was not the case, and it was confirmed to be severe cold symptoms."
When asked if he had watched the debate footage again, President Biden said no. He emphasized, "I prepared for the debate, and all these mistakes are my fault, no one's else," and "I was prepared and usually listen well and make good judgments in regular meetings." President Biden also claimed, "(During the debate) Trump lied more than 20 times, but I did not," bringing up former President Trump's 'false statement controversy.'
