The Gimhae Research Institute is the fifth to be established among basic local governments nationwide, following Seongnam, Hwaseong, Jeonju, and Cheongju.

The establishment of the Gimhae Research Institute became possible in 2022 when relevant laws were revised to allow basic local governments with a population of over 500,000 to set up such institutes.

The Gimhae Research Institute is organized into three research divisions?Economic and Industrial Research, Culture, Tourism and Welfare Research, and Urban, Transportation and Environmental Research?along with an administrative support office, forming a structure of one office and three divisions.

Kim Jaewon, the first president, and 18 expert researchers in various fields will conduct research on the city's mid- to long-term development direction and citizen benefit systems in each sector, aiming to develop sustainable policies for Gimhae's growth.

The institute will be responsible for: ▲ establishing mid- to long-term development plans for regional development ▲ carrying out commissioned projects for the city and its affiliated organizations ▲ conducting policy research with nearby local governments such as the Nakdong River Council ▲ planning new business initiatives.

It will also address rapid changes in social, economic, and industrial paradigms, develop solutions through citizen participation, and establish a scientific research system based on data.

Mayor Hong said, "The research institute, which will serve as the think tank for our city administration, has taken its first step," and added, "I hope it will become a key pillar leading the development of Gimhae, the central city of the Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam region, and presenting its vision."

President Kim said, "I feel a great sense of responsibility for the mission of developing differentiated policies and supporting city administration for the next 100 years of Gimhae," and added, "We will dedicate all our capabilities so that our city can become a local government with international competitiveness."
