Yuseonghun, Geumcheon-gu Mayor, Conducts On-site Inspection of Air Force Base Space Innovation Zone Pilot Project with Deputy Minister of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) announced on the 5th that officials including the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport visited the site of the 3rd Missile Defense Brigade in Doksan-dong (Air Force base site) on the 1st to support the candidate site for the leading project of the Spatial Innovation Zone selected recently.

The site visit was attended by Geumcheon-gu Mayor Yu Seong-hoon, Jin Hyun-hwan, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the Ministry’s Urban Policy Officer, Kim Shin-ae, Director of the Ministry of National Defense’s State Property Division, and others. The delegation inspected the military facilities of the Air Force base and received a briefing on the district’s project overview and development plans, followed by discussions on support measures.

At the meeting, Vice Minister Jin said, “Applying the Spatial Innovation Zone allows for high-density, mixed-use development of idle urban land to create new growth hubs. The Doksan-dong Air Force base is an optimal location and will serve as a model for the leading project.” He added, “The development of the Air Force base is a good example of public-private-military cooperation. Relevant agencies will closely collaborate to ensure the project’s success and support smooth progress of follow-up procedures such as the designation of the Spatial Innovation Zone.”

The ‘Spatial Innovation Zone’ is a special urban planning district where regulations on permitted building uses, building coverage ratio, floor area ratio, and others are relaxed. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has designated the Doksan-dong Air Force base site as a leading project site for the Spatial Innovation Zone, recognizing the need for facility relocation and the creation of new functions in the area.

The Air Force base site is scheduled to be designated as a Spatial Innovation Zone after the district establishes a spatial restructuring plan containing detailed development plans and undergoes statutory procedures including reviews by the Central Urban Planning Committee and the Local Urban Planning Committee.

Geumcheon-gu Mayor Yu Seong-hoon stated, “By utilizing the state-owned land (Air Force base) located in the city center, we plan to build an urban-type military base to improve the working conditions of military personnel and develop the remaining land to create a high-tech industrial hub focused on IT in the southwest region, forming a compact city.” He added, “We ask for the active cooperation and support of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of National Defense to realize this project where the public, private, and military sectors coexist.”
