Hong Jun-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, Strongly Criticizes Current Political Situation
"Conservative Right-Wing Camp Collapsing... Need to Wake Up"
With the People Power Party's July 23 leadership election approaching, Hong Joon-pyo, the mayor of Daegu who has repeatedly called for conservative right-wing unity, expressed concern that "the political situation is worrying as it is unfolding like the eve of Park Geun-hye's impeachment."
On the 5th, Mayor Hong said this on his social media service (SNS) Facebook, stating, "The rampage of the major opposition party, the compliance of some party leader candidates, the bandwagon effect of some senior ruling party members, the zeal of opposition-leaning media, and the series of events starting with impeachment petitions seem to be the prelude to another Gwanghwamun candlelight protest."
The major opposition party Hong referred to is the Democratic Party of Korea, and the compliance of some party leader candidates appears to be aimed at candidate Han Dong-hoon, who has declared his candidacy for the People Power Party leadership election. Mayor Hong emphasized, "If the 2017 incident recurs, not only will the country suffer misfortune, but the conservative right-wing camp, which has been one wing protecting this country, will be destroyed. In 2017, Han Dong-hoon, in his 'Hwayangyeonhwa (花樣年華, the most beautiful moment in life),' tried to destroy us through investigations, but now we are at risk of being destroyed in the political arena. We all need to come to our senses."
Meanwhile, the number of supporters for the petition titled 'Request for Immediate Submission of the Impeachment Motion Against President Yoon Seok-yeol' posted on the National Assembly website exceeded 1.17 million as of 3 p.m. on the 5th. Currently, the petition was referred to the Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 24th of last month and is under review.
