Visit to Hawaii Indo-Pacific Command

President Yoon Suk-yeol will visit the United States Indo-Pacific Command in Hawaii on July 8-9, and attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit held in Washington, D.C. on July 10-11. Through this trip, he aims to secure South Korea's security interests encompassing the Korea-U.S. alliance, NATO, and the Indo-Pacific region.
Kim Tae-hyo, First Deputy Director of the National Security Office, stated at a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office on the 5th, "President Yoon and the First Lady plan to visit Washington, D.C. from July 10 to 11 to attend the '2024 NATO Summit.'"
On July 10, President Yoon plans to hold a series of bilateral meetings with more than five NATO member countries, including the Czech Republic, Sweden, Finland, and Norway, to discuss bilateral issues as well as regional and international affairs.
That evening, President Yoon and the First Lady will attend a social dinner hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden and the First Lady, the host country of the summit. On the morning of July 11, they will participate in a summit meeting with the four Indo-Pacific NATO partners (IP4): South Korea, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand.
On the afternoon of July 11, President Yoon will attend the 'NATO Public Forum' as the sole speaker for the Indo-Pacific session.
Prior to attending the NATO summit, President Yoon will visit Honolulu, Hawaii on July 8-9. On the afternoon of the 8th, he will visit the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, where Korean War veterans are buried, to lay a wreath and preside over a dinner meeting with Korean expatriates.
On the morning of July 9, he will visit the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command to receive a military and security briefing from the Commander of the Indo-Pacific Command and encourage the troops stationed there. This will be President Yoon's third visit to the Indo-Pacific Command as the President of South Korea.
Deputy Director Kim explained, "The Pacific Command in Hawaii was visited by President Chun Doo-hwan in 1981 and President Kim Young-sam in 1995. It was renamed the Indo-Pacific Command in 2018, and it has been six years since the renaming. President Yoon will be the first South Korean president to visit since the name change."
