Recently, the YouTube channel 'BlackboxBros' released a dashcam video recorded in an underground parking lot of a commercial building in Yeongtong-gu, Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. In the video, the informant, Mr. A, was leaving the underground parking lot after using the building on the day of the incident. However, from the moment he entered the parking lot, he felt that a white Bentley was closely following his car. The Bentley stayed right behind Mr. A’s car, even making engine revving sounds as they approached the parking lot exit. Mr. A explained, "I felt uneasy because it kept tailgating me closely," adding, "It followed me at a distance of about 10 to 50 cm while revving its engine." He continued, "I felt threatened. I was worried because I didn’t want to collide with such an expensive car."

The moment Mr. A paid the parking fee and exited the lot, the reason behind the Bentley’s suspicious behavior became clear. As soon as the barrier opened after Mr. A paid, the Bentley driver quickly took advantage of the gap before the barrier closed again and rushed out of the parking lot. Mr. A explained, "They were trying to escape without paying the parking fee," adding, "It seemed like the Bentley was waiting for other cars to leave. The engine was already running inside the parking lot."

Netizens who saw the video criticized the Bentley driver, commenting things like, "Is the Bentley worth over 300 million won a fake, or is the driver not human?", "They bought an expensive car but can’t even pay the parking fee," "Can you really buy a Bentley by saving money like that?" and "Aren’t they ashamed?"

Tailgating and turning around to avoid parking fees... 'Parking lot tricks' punishable by up to 3 years imprisonment or fines up to 5 million won

Drivers’ tricks to avoid paying parking fees have often been a hot topic. Tailgating closely behind the car in front before the barrier fully closes, as in the previous case, is one of the most well-known methods. In 2022, in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, footage captured 12 vehicles leaving a parking lot without paying a single cent using this method.

When the barrier gate opened, the car did not leave but reversed back to park inside the lot. This act was aimed at exploiting the fact that if the barrier gate opens and the vehicle is recognized as exiting, no parking fee is charged.

Another trick exploits the fact that turning vehicles are not charged parking fees. Last year, at a public parking lot in Jeju City, a vehicle was caught entering the lot and immediately heading toward the exit. When the barrier opened, instead of leaving, the car reversed and parked inside the lot again. This behavior takes advantage of the system that does not charge parking fees if the barrier opens and the vehicle is recognized as exiting.

Using such tricks to exploit parking lots can be punished under the crime of fraudulent use of convenience facilities, with penalties including imprisonment for up to 3 years or fines up to 5 million won. In fact, in 2022, a driver in Songpa-gu, Seoul, was fined after illegally using a building’s parking facility 66 times without paying. The driver tried to save 1.98 million won in parking fees but ended up paying a 3 million won fine.
