"Asked for what they wanted, they said 50,000 won"
"Suspected self-harm extortion"
Recently, a controversy has arisen after a man walking down an alleyway appeared to deliberately collide with a slow-moving car.
On the 3rd, a video was posted on BobaeDream's Instagram showing a man staggering down a narrow alley and falling after colliding with a car. The informant, Mr. A, explained the situation: "I was passing through a narrow alley, and saw a man staggering as if drunk from afar, so I slowed down and was driving cautiously. When the car jolted, I stopped and found that the pedestrian’s foot was caught under the car."
He continued, "I immediately called 119 (emergency services). Although he said he was okay, I was worried since his foot was caught, so I reported it. I tried to proceed with the insurance claim by calling the insurance company, but he insisted he was fine and stopped me during the call."
Later, Mr. A asked the man, "If you are hurt, you should get treatment, so please give me your contact information." However, the man rambled incoherently and mentioned amounts of 100,000 to 200,000 won in cash before hesitating. Mr. A said, "It seemed like he wanted a financial settlement. He said he had just been released from prison, didn’t want to waste time with the police, and claimed he didn’t even get money for medicine. We argued for about 30 to 40 minutes."
He added, "I repeatedly told him I would handle it through insurance rather than a cash settlement, but since the conversation wasn’t going anywhere, I asked, 'What do you want?' He kept saying he didn’t want anything, but eventually said, 'Just give me 50,000 won.'"

When Mr. A tried to end the matter after the settlement, the police advised him to report the case to the traffic investigation department. Later, after checking with the CCTV monitoring center, it was reported that there was evidence suggesting the man deliberately put his foot under the car. Mr. A said, "I plan to visit the district office to secure the CCTV footage. I suspect this is a case of self-inflicted injury for extortion. I’m asking for advice on how to handle this."
Netizens who saw the post responded with comments such as, "This is why when you see a person in an alley, you stop and wait until they pass. It seems difficult to determine if this is self-inflicted injury for extortion based on just the black box footage," "More definitive evidence should be collected through CCTV. And next time, let pedestrians go first in such narrow alleys," "Did he put his foot under the car just to get 50,000 won?" and "This looks like insurance fraud."
