On the 26th of last month, "Illegal Filming on Campus" Reported
Police Identify Suspect... Mobile Phone Under Forensic Analysis
A male middle school student was caught by the police for illegally filming in the girls' restroom of his own school.
On the 4th, Jeonju Deokjin Police Station in Jeonbuk is investigating middle school student A on suspicion of illegally filming in the girls' restroom (violation of the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes). According to Yonhap News on the same day, A is accused of secretly entering the girls' restroom on campus on the 26th of last month and filming a female's body with his mobile phone. Police who responded to a report saying "It seems a male student was seen coming out of the girls' restroom" identified A as a suspect after checking the school's closed-circuit television (CCTV) and arrested him. The police are currently conducting a forensic examination of A's mobile phone.
During the police investigation, A reportedly stated that "he had illegally filmed several times in the past." A police official said, "This is an ongoing investigation, and due to concerns about secondary damage, it is difficult to disclose detailed information."
Repeated Cases of Illegal Filming in School Restrooms Among Middle and High School Students
Meanwhile, illegal filming inside middle and high schools continues to be difficult to eradicate. On the 24th of last month, at a high school in Haeundae-gu, Busan, third-year student B, who was illegally filming in the girls' restroom, jumped from the fourth floor of the school and was hospitalized after his crime was about to be exposed. At that time, B secretly entered the girls' restroom following a female student and filmed videos. Later, a female student who noticed the camera sound and the shape of the mobile phone checked the surroundings and found B lying on the ground outside the building. Due to this accident, B suffered fractures in his arm and hip joint and is currently receiving inpatient treatment at the hospital. The school plans to start a fact-finding investigation as soon as B is discharged.
Also, earlier last month, a high school student who illegally filmed more than 200 times in the restroom of his own high school and a restaurant restroom run by his parents, and even distributed the footage, was sentenced to prison. On the 5th of last month, the Jeju District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Hong Eun-pyo) sentenced C (19), who was detained and prosecuted on charges including violation of the Special Act on the Punishment of Sexual Crimes (sexual purpose intrusion into multi-use places), to four years in prison. He was also ordered to attend 40 hours of sexual violence treatment programs and was banned from employment at institutions related to children, adolescents, and persons with disabilities for five years.
C is accused of illegally filming 235 times targeting unspecified individuals with a mobile phone at a restaurant and the girls' restroom of a high school in Jeju City over about a month starting from September last year, and distributing the footage 10 times on social networking services (SNS). His crime was uncovered when a teacher at the school found a box of tissues containing a mobile phone with the camera function turned on in the restroom and reported it to the police. C was expelled from school.
