Signed Purchase Agreement with LH for 6 Lots Next to 'New Campus' Site
Construction of Samsung Electronics Ultra-Fine Semiconductor Process R&D Center Utilizing EUV
ASML, the world's No. 1 company in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography equipment, will build a research and development (R&D) center in Dongtan 2 New City, Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province. It is located right next to the 'Hwaseong New Campus' currently being developed by the company.
According to Hwaseong City and Korea Land & Housing Corporation (LH) on the 4th, ASML signed a land purchase contract with LH on the 28th of last month for six parcels of land in Block 74 of Dongtan 2 New City. The total land area purchased is approximately 19,000㎡.
ASML plans to jointly invest about 1 trillion KRW with Samsung Electronics to build facilities supporting research and development for ultra-fine semiconductor manufacturing processes using EUV on this site. The investment scale is 400 billion KRW from ASML and 600 billion KRW from Samsung Electronics.
ASML’s choice of Dongtan 2 New City as the site for the R&D center is understood to be based on the synergy effect with the Hwaseong New Campus currently under construction. Initially, in the industry, other candidate sites for the R&D center included the advanced system semiconductor national industrial complex in Yongin Idong and Namsa-eup, where Samsung Electronics’ production lines are planned.
ASML has finalized the site for its new research and development center in Dongtan 2 New City, Hwaseong, and signed a land purchase agreement. ASML is currently developing the New Campus on a 16,000㎡ site in Dongtan 2 New City, aiming for completion in 2025, consisting of two buildings from four basement floors to eleven above-ground floors. ASML plans to invest 240 billion KRW here to build a remanufacturing center for parts related to deep ultraviolet and extreme ultraviolet lithography equipment, as well as a global training center to transfer advanced technology.
Meanwhile, Hwaseong Mayor Jeong Myeong-geun met with Frank Heemskerk, ASML’s Executive Vice President of External Affairs, during his visit to Korea, and stated, "We will provide one-stop services offering close support from various permits and approvals to ensure the success of the ASML project promoted in Hwaseong." In response, Vice President Heemskerk said, "Samsung Electronics is an important customer of ASML," adding, "The establishment of this R&D center is expected to strengthen the technological alliance between the two companies and serve as an opportunity to expand and reinforce cooperation with semiconductor companies in Hwaseong City."
