Yoon Nominates Kim Byunghwan as Financial Services Commission Chairman, Kim Wanseop as Environment Minister, and Lee Jinsuk as Broadcasting Commission Chairman

President Yoon Suk-yeol on the 4th nominated Kim Byung-hwan, First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, as the new candidate for Financial Services Commission Chairman, and Kim Wan-seop, former Second Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance, as the candidate for Minister of Environment. Additionally, Lee Jin-sook, former president of Daejeon MBC, was selected as the candidate for Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission.


Jung Jin-seok, Chief of Staff to the President, held a briefing at the Yongsan Presidential Office that morning to announce these political appointments.


Candidate Kim is from Wonju, Gangwon Province, and graduated from Korea University with a degree in Business Administration. He earned a master's degree in Public Administration from Seoul National University and a doctorate in Economics from the University of Missouri, USA, and entered public service by passing the 36th Administrative Examination.


He has held positions such as Director of Budget Standards at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Senior Advisor at the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), Director of Public Innovation Planning at the Ministry of Economy and Finance, Director of Fiscal Performance Review, Secretary to the Deputy Prime Minister, Director of Social Budget Review, and Director of the Budget Office.


Chief Jung said of candidate Kim, "He has overseen the last two budget formulations under the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, demonstrating a deep understanding of the government's philosophy." He added, "Considering the increasing impact of environmental issues such as climate change on the economy, he will implement balanced policies with a broad perspective."


He further evaluated him as "the right person to listen attentively to diverse public voices on environmental matters and to reasonably improve environmental issues based on his policy experience."

Candidate Lee, nominated for Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, is a former journalist who joined MBC in 1987 and has served as International News Director, Washington Correspondent, Head of News Headquarters, and President of Daejeon MBC.


Chief Jung said of candidate Lee, "He was recognized for his abilities as a journalist, notably as the first female war correspondent during the Iraq War, and possesses well-rounded management and communication skills in leadership." He added, "Based on his experience and drive, he is the right person to normalize the operation of the Korea Communications Commission, secure media fairness and public interest, and restore public trust in broadcasting."


Candidate Kim, nominated for Financial Services Commission Chairman, entered public service in 1993 by passing the 37th Administrative Examination. He has held key macroeconomic policy positions such as Director of Economic Analysis, Director of Comprehensive Policy, and Director-General of Economic Policy at the Ministry of Economy and Finance. With the launch of the Yoon Suk-yeol administration, he served as the inaugural Economic and Financial Secretary to the President.


Chief Jung explained, "He combines a comprehensive perspective on the economy with crisis response capabilities, having served as Economic and Financial Secretary to the President and Second Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance under the Yoon Suk-yeol government." He added, "Based on his outstanding insight into finance and macroeconomics, he is the right person to effectively carry out policies for stabilizing the financial market."


Meanwhile, President Yoon also nominated Yeon Won-jeong, Personnel System Secretary at the Presidential Office, as head of the Ministry of Personnel Management; Kim Beom-seok, Economic and Financial Secretary at the Presidential Office, as First Vice Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance; and Park Beom-su, Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Secretary at the Presidential Office, as Vice Minister of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.


Additionally, Kwon Jae-han, Director of Agricultural Innovation Policy at the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, was appointed as Administrator of the Rural Development Administration; Lim Sang-seop, Deputy Administrator of the Korea Forest Service, as Administrator of the Korea Forest Service; and Kim Jae-hong, Professor of Korean History at Kookmin University, as Director of the National Museum of Korea under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
