According to the county on the 4th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety selected Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, which consists of 265 large and small islands, as the host of the ‘6th Island Day’ to be held on August 8, 2025.

The event will be held at Wando Sinji Myeongsashipri Beach, the best beach on the southern coast that has acquired the international certification ‘Blue Flag,’ awarded to safe and eco-friendly beaches.

Wando-gun, selected by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety as the ‘2024 Island You Want to Visit,’ is home to many representative islands of Korea, including Cheongsando, the first Slow City in Asia, Bogildo, and Saengildo, among six selected islands.

Along with Sinji Myeongsashipri Beach, the pristine beach that will be the main stage of the event, Wando also possesses natural environment, cultural and historical resources, and healing facilities such as the Cheonghaejin Historic Site and Korea’s first opened Wando Marine Healing Center.

In addition to island travel, visitors can experience marine healing using marine resources at the Marine Healing Center, emerging as a new wellness tourism destination.

Moreover, Wando-gun has successfully hosted international and domestic events such as the ‘International Seaweed Expo’ twice, the ‘Jeonnam Garden Festival,’ the ‘Cheongsando Slow Walking Festival,’ the ‘Jangbogo Seafood Festival,’ the ‘13th Fisheries Day,’ and the ‘Seaweed Day.’

The selection of the Island Day host was conducted through expert on-site inspections and presentations, with Wando-gun’s natural environment, tourism recognition, and extensive experience in hosting various events playing a significant role in the decision.

Additionally, the local government’s willingness to host was highly evaluated for preparing related projects in advance, such as the Marine Healing Festa, nighttime landscape maintenance, establishment of a marine leisure center, and the opening of an earthing road.

The 6th Island Day event will include a commemorative ceremony, exhibition halls where visitors can experience island history, academic events, marine healing and marine leisure sports experiences, a unique drone show, sand sculpture exhibitions, and concerts.

Governor Shin Woo-cheol said, “I feel very honored that we can hold the ‘Island Day’ event on Wando, the only healing island in Korea,” and added, “As a representative island tourism destination of Korea, we will do our best to prepare the event to spread the value of islands and lead the revitalization of island tourism.”

Meanwhile, the first Island Day event was held in 2019 in Mokpo and Sinan, and this year it will be held in Boryeong City.
