In the wake of the Seoul City Hall Station wrong-way driving disaster that resulted in 16 casualties, outrage has erupted as mocking messages targeting the victims were found at the memorial site.

On the 4th, multiple online communities posted a thread titled "Shocking Mocking Messages at the City Hall Station Disaster Site." The post included photos of citizens placing wreaths and condolence messages at the memorial space near City Hall Station where the accident occurred.


Among these, a piece of paper containing what appeared to be mocking content directed at the victims sparked anger among netizens. The problematic note was written in red letters stating, "Wishing (rest in peace) to those who have become XXXXX (victims)." This is seen as a clear mockery of the tragic disaster victims.

Netizens who saw the mocking message responded with comments such as, "The person who wrote the mocking message should be identified through CCTV," "The victims' families should file a lawsuit," "Isn't this crazy? That person must be caught and justice served," "It feels like society is sick," and "Where did things go wrong?"


Earlier, at around 9:27 PM on the 1st, driver A (68) was driving a Genesis vehicle and exited a hotel near City Hall Station, then drove the wrong way on a one-way four-lane road. A struck two vehicles in succession and hit pedestrians on the sidewalk and crosswalk. He continued driving for about 100 meters before finally stopping in front of exit 12 of City Hall Station on the opposite side. The total wrong-way driving distance was estimated to be 200 meters.


The police reported that the total number of casualties from this accident is 16. Among them, 9 died, all male office workers in their 30s to 50s. The deceased included 2 City Hall employees, 4 bank workers, and 3 hospital staff members.


The police have booked A on charges of professional negligence causing death and injury under the Special Act on Traffic Accident Handling. However, A claims sudden unintended acceleration immediately after the accident.
