The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN), established in 2004, designates cities that have promoted urban development and cultural diversity through the cultivation of cultural industries based on cultural assets and creativity, after a thorough evaluation by UNESCO.

This selection is especially meaningful as it marks Busan's elevation to the leading role of 'Chair City' for the first time in 10 years since being designated as the first 'UNESCO Creative City of Film' in Asia in 2014. It is also the result of Busan's active participation as the Vice-Chair City of the UCCN film subnetwork since March 2021.

As the Chair City in the film sector, Busan will serve a two-year term from July this year to June 2026, together with Bristol, United Kingdom, which has been selected as the Vice-Chair City.

At the film subnetwork meeting held on July 2 at 4:30 p.m. local time, Busan was unanimously selected as the Chair City in the film sector.

The official announcement is scheduled to be made at the closing ceremony of the '16th UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Meeting' on July 5.

The '16th UNESCO Creative Cities Network Annual Meeting' has been taking place in Braga, Portugal, since July 1.

With this selection as Chair City, Busan's position and authority within the UCCN have been strengthened, allowing it to play a more leading and diverse role.

The 'Chair City' serves as a member of the UCCN Steering Committee, representing the UCCN film subnetwork, and is granted decision-making authority over all UNESCO activities, builds cooperative relationships within the subnetwork, and plans joint projects.

Since 2004, UNESCO has operated the 'UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN)' in seven fields: design, crafts and folk art, gastronomy, media arts, film, music, and literature. As of last year, 350 cities from 112 countries have participated, continuing cultural exchanges.

The 'Creative Cities of Film' include 26 cities from 22 countries, such as Cannes in France, Rome in Italy, Sydney in Australia, and Bristol in the United Kingdom.

Mayor Park Hyungjun stated, "Since being designated as a 'UNESCO Creative City of Film' in 2014, Busan has established itself as a world-class film city. With this selection as Chair City, Busan will lead the world with its capabilities and potential, form a global network in the film industry, and move forward as 'Global Film City Busan,' a hub for diverse cultural exchanges."
