HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean are fiercely competing to secure the contract for the Korean next-generation destroyer (KDDX) project, valued at 7.8 trillion KRW, engaging in lawsuits and counter-lawsuits while attracting significant attention in the industry by recruiting high-profile figures. Both sides have been consecutively recruiting prominent individuals such as former National Security Office chiefs, prosecutors general, and naval generals.
HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering recently recruited former Prosecutor General Go Heung. Starting from the 1st of this month, former Prosecutor General Go has been serving as the Head of Compliance Management at HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering. HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering is the intermediate holding company for the shipbuilding division under HD Hyundai, which oversees HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and others.
Former Prosecutor General Go Heung is a public security expert who served in the National Intelligence Service, as the Director of Public Security Planning at the Ministry of Justice, and as the Public Security Planning Officer at the Supreme Prosecutors' Office. From July 2019 to August 2020, he served as the Chief Prosecutor of Ulsan District Prosecutors' Office, where he led the investigation into the leak of the KDDX concept design documents.
In March, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering also recruited former National Security Office Chief Kim Seong-han as an outside director. Former Chief Kim served as the first National Security Office chief under the Yoon Seok-yeol administration before resigning in March last year. He attended Daekwang Elementary School in Seoul with President Yoon. During the Lee Myung-bak administration, he also served as the 2nd Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. At HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, he serves as an outside director and holds positions such as member of the Audit Committee, Internal Transactions Committee, Outside Director Candidate Recommendation Committee, ESG Committee, and chairman of the Compensation Committee.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hanwha Ocean also engaged in a recruitment battle for generals last year. In August last year, Hanwha Ocean recruited former Navy Education Command Commander Jeong Seung-gyun as a vice president. Former Commander Jeong served as Chief of Strategic Planning at the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Chief of Planning and Management at the Navy Headquarters. In response, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries recruited retired Army Lieutenant General Kim Jong-bae as a vice president in October of the same year.
