On the 26th of last month, a post titled "I was rear-ended by an uninsured, unlicensed driver who tampered with their license plate" was uploaded to an online community. The author, Mr. A, explained the situation, saying, "I always pass by an elementary school on my way to work and drive slowly to avoid harming the children. Today, while driving at about 15 km/h and stopping briefly because a student was crossing the street, the car behind me still hit my vehicle."

In the video shared by Mr. A, an orange Morning car can be seen following Mr. A’s vehicle. Despite Mr. A’s car stopping, the other vehicle fails to maintain a safe distance and crashes into the rear of Mr. A’s car.

Mr. A said, "It was my first accident, so I was very shaken, but there were many unsettling things." After immediately reporting to the police and requesting the insurance company to come, Mr. A claimed that the driver of the other car, Mr. B, was unlicensed, uninsured, and had manually written the license plate with incorrect numbers.

Mr. A added, "This information was confirmed by the police during their investigation." He expressed frustration, saying, "The car was new, so this makes it even more aggravating. When I contacted the service center for an estimate, the repair cost was about 2.5 million won." He continued, "The other party has been sending messages asking me to 'let it go,' saying 'things are tough,' and claiming to be from a single-parent family. It feels like a personal settlement will be difficult." He asked, "I am wondering if I should proceed with criminal and civil settlements and whether I can file a claim with my own insurance for the repair and rental car expenses. I feel really frustrated."

Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "This is probably the worst traffic accident story I've seen recently," "They were a ticking time bomb driving around," "They look nice but do all kinds of bad things," "This must be a headache," "Most single-parent families don’t drive without a license. That’s just an excuse," "People like that shouldn’t be given leniency," and "The poorly written license plate is laughable."

Meanwhile, similar incidents have occurred before. In February last year, a public official, Mr. C (50), was prosecuted for attaching a fake license plate made of paper to his vehicle and was sentenced to prison in the second trial (6 months). In 2022, a man in his 60s who had his license plate confiscated due to unpaid fines was given a suspended sentence after attaching a paper-printed license plate to his car.
