First Tropical Night Observed This Year in Eastern Jeonnam... Monsoon Rain Subsides, Heatwave Intensifies

A tropical night is a phenomenon where the temperature remains above 25℃ overnight (from 6:01 PM to 9 AM the next day).

As the monsoon rain subsides and the heat intensifies, heatwave warnings were issued as of 11 AM for Gwangju and Jeonnam areas including Naju, Damyang, Gokseong, Gurye, Hwasun, Boseong, Gwangyang, Suncheon, and Yeongam. These warnings will take effect from 2 PM on the same day.

For the time being, the Korea Meteorological Administration forecasts that the highest apparent temperature will be around 33℃ mainly in inland areas of Gwangju and Jeonnam, and other regions will also experience heat above 31℃.

Apparent temperature is a quantitative measure of how hot it feels to people, combining the effects of temperature and humidity. Based on a humidity of about 55%, the apparent temperature increases or decreases by 1℃ for every 10% increase or decrease in humidity.

A representative from the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration said, "Since the possibility of heat-related illnesses is high, outdoor activities and outings should be avoided, and food management must be thorough to prevent food poisoning." He added, "At outdoor workplaces, it is necessary to provide cool water and prepare rest areas, and livestock farms should operate fans and misting devices to control the temperature."
