Concerns Over Strengthening Military Cooperation Between North Korea and Russia
On the 2nd, Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul met with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who is visiting Korea, and discussed a wide range of issues including the situation on the Korean Peninsula, developments related to the U.S. presidential election, and North Korea-Russia military cooperation, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on the 3rd.
Minister Cho and former Secretary Rice particularly expressed concern over the strengthening of military cooperation between North Korea and Russia, exchanging views on the background of the recent North Korea-Russia treaty, prospects for the advancement of North Korea-Russia relations, and directions for response.
Minister Cho emphasized the need for a firm response from the international community, stating that they will respond to the North Korea-Russia threat through a strong ROK-U.S. alliance and ROK-U.S.-Japan security cooperation. Former Secretary Rice agreed with this and said she would actively support Korea's efforts to safeguard peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the international community.
