Lee Sang-il, Mayor of Yongin, "Continuously Expanding Community-Based Projects"

73 Cases Including School Uniform Support and Minor Repairs for Vulnerable Groups Proceeding Normally
"Please Make Citizens Feel That Yongin Has Changed"

Mayor Lee Sang-il of Yongin City, Gyeonggi Province, who has passed the midpoint of his eighth term, is driving the expansion of citizen-centered, life-oriented projects that have a high level of public satisfaction.

On the 1st, Yongin City held the '2024 Citizen-Experienced Life-Oriented Project Report and Progress Meeting' chaired by Mayor Lee, announcing these plans. At the meeting, the city explained that out of 85 newly identified and ongoing life-oriented projects this year, 73 are being carried out normally, and 12 projects are scheduled to be implemented as planned after this month.

This year, Yongin City is promoting various life-oriented projects. A representative project is the support fund for uniforms for new middle and high school students. The city expanded the support fund from 300,000 won last year to 400,000 won this year, and also broadened the scope of the fund from uniforms only to include sportswear and casual wear.

Support for 'minor repairs' for vulnerable groups is also notable. This project assists single elderly households with minor household repairs such as replacing fluorescent lights or faucets, which are simple but difficult to handle alone. The city also supported the installation of customized ramps at 55 small facilities such as restaurants, cafes, convenience stores, and pharmacies to aid mobility-impaired pedestrians.

The city operates a shredding support team that tours each village to help farmers process agricultural byproducts like chili pepper stalks and corn stalks without burning them. Additionally, the Yongin Citizen Farm offers free repotting services for companion plants, receiving positive responses.

Citizen safety projects are also being expanded. Artificial intelligence (AI) traffic safety facilities to prevent pedestrian accidents at crosswalks near school routes have been installed at nine locations. The electric vehicle distribution project for elderly residents in rural areas has been expanded from two-wheeled to three-wheeled vehicles, achieving accident prevention effects.

Meanwhile, the city is developing six public forests using idle urban land. Two of these have been completed, and the rest are scheduled to be completed sequentially after July. In response to the growing demand, 12 barefoot trails were created this year, with plans to add 11 more by the end of the year.

Mayor Lee urged, "Please expand projects that receive positive responses from citizens and improve areas that are lacking. If there are good policies in other cities, find and incorporate them into our administration with an open attitude so that citizens can feel that Yongin has changed."
