Blinken "The World Likes Biden's Policies" Defense
U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken defended President Joe Biden, who was widely regarded as having suffered a defeat in last week's presidential debate, stating, "Global opinion polls show that trust in American leadership has sharply increased over the past three and a half years."
On the 1st (local time), at a seminar hosted by the Brookings Institution in Washington D.C., Secretary Blinken said, "The world has experienced President Biden's leadership over the past three and a half years, not just the one night of the TV debate."
He added, "People have observed U.S. policies over the past three and a half years," and "Most of them like the policies and choices pursued by President Biden."
Vedant Patel, Senior Deputy Spokesperson for the State Department, also stated at a briefing that "world leaders know that President Biden has been at the center of foreign policy for decades," and "They trust the policies pursued by President Biden and the U.S. government."
When asked whether allies had expressed concerns about President Biden's performance in the TV debate, he replied, "There have been no diplomatic conversations worth mentioning."
At the seminar, Secretary Blinken also addressed the impact of the rise of right-wing parties in recent European elections on the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), saying, "(NATO) has been on a clear trajectory over the past three years," and "I do not see this changing regardless of the current political situation in Europe."
Regarding Europe's support for Ukraine, he explained, "Regardless of political backgrounds, you have heard continuous commitments of support from various European parties."
In response to a question about China's global policy objectives, he said, "China's clear goal is to become the leading and dominant country in the international system over the coming decades," adding, "They have a different vision for the future of the world, and we do not agree with it. We will fiercely compete to be the nation that shapes the future."
Secretary Blinken also commented on the war between Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas, stating, "A ceasefire is achievable," and "The whole world supports this, excluding Hamas."
