Kim Tae-heum, Governor of Chungnam Province, stated that if the residents continue to oppose the Seokmun Livestock Complex in Dangjin, "we will not force it if everyone is against it."
At a press conference marking the 2nd anniversary of the 8th elected administration on the 1st, Governor Kim said, "The reason we initially planned to promote it in Dangjin, Boryeong, and Seocheon was because these are reclaimed lands and national property, making it easier to proceed," adding, "However, we will not pursue it if it means conflict and fighting with the residents."
The province plans to establish the Chungnam ICT Convergence Smart Livestock Complex on the reclaimed lands of Seokmun in Dangjin and Busa in Boryeong and Seocheon by 2026 as part of the 8th administration's campaign promises.
However, opposition from residents due to concerns about environmental pollution and disease outbreaks caused a red light for the establishment of the livestock complex. The Seokmun Reclaimed Land Livestock Complex Opposition Committee firmly expressed their opposition by submitting a petition with 21,614 signatures from Dangjin citizens to the province on the 25th of last month.
In response to this opposition, Governor Kim explained, "The livestock complex processes everything internally, so there is no odor, and manure can be converted into biogas to produce electricity or hydrogen, making it utilitarian," adding, "People can go to work and leave in suits, and veterinarians are employed there, so prevention of infectious diseases is also possible."
He continued, "However, if the residents oppose it, we will not force it," and said, "In places like Nonsan, there is demand for smart livestock complexes, so we will first promote projects in areas where local residents want them."
