270,000 Units Sold in First Half... Largest Half-Year Sales Since 2017
GM Korea's manufacturing plant sold approximately 49,000 vehicles last month based on completed cars, achieving the highest half-year performance since 2017. The Chevrolet Trax crossover played a key role overseas. However, domestic sales plummeted to less than half.
GM Korea announced on the 1st that it sold 48,860 units in June this year, a 1.9% decrease compared to the same month last year. However, cumulative sales for the first half of the year reached 269,422 units, a 25.7% increase compared to the same period last year. This is the highest half-year performance since 2017.
Overseas sales performed well by region. Total sales reached 46,959 units, a 5.1% increase compared to the same period last year. This marked the 27th consecutive month of year-over-year growth. The star performer was the Chevrolet Trax crossover (including derivative models). Overseas sales last month (based on shipments) were 31,436 units, a 32.8% increase compared to the same month last year. Since first launching sales in overseas markets in February last year, it has sold more than 30,000 units per month for two consecutive months starting from May. In contrast, overseas sales of the Trailblazer were 15,523 units, a 26.1% decrease compared to the same month last year.
Domestic sales continued to struggle. Only 1,901 units were sold, a sharp 63.2% decline compared to the same period last year. This is lower than KG Mobility (4,102 units) and Renault Korea (2,041 units). Most vehicle sales were cut in half. The best-selling Trax crossover sold 1,463 units, down 61.9% compared to the same month last year. The Trailblazer (-61.0%), Traverse (-47.0%), and Tahoe (-42.9%) all decreased by about half. The pickup truck 'GMC Sierra,' which sold 30 units last month, was the only model to increase, rising 66.7%.
Gustavo Colossi, Vice President of Sales, Service & Marketing at GM Korea, said, "Achieving the highest half-year performance since 2017 is proof that GM's core products such as the Chevrolet Trax crossover and Trailblazer are highly recognized for their competitiveness in the global market." He added, "In the second half of the year, we will continue the upward momentum by meeting customer expectations through excellent product quality and customer-focused differentiated marketing activities."
